Bel Octobre

Anne reveled in the world of colour about her.
“Oh, Marilla,” she exclaimed one Saturday morning, coming dancing in with her arms full of gorgeous boughs,

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers. It would be terrible if we just skipped from September to November, wouldn’t it? Look at these maple branches. Don’t they give you a thrill–several thrills?”
― L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables

October has been, not only beautiful, but also very personally rewarding. A month after we’ve put our little one into Montessori, she seems to have gone over a threshold — no more tears during morning drop-offs. She seems more confident, she is constantly building her vocabulary and language skills { That twee is  weally big, Mama. It’s humongous! } She’s more into independent and imaginative play; picks up books and reads. She’s just been incredible in her development.

I have also been keen on my development.

I found Carrie Anne James of French is Beautiful on instagram via French Words. I’d been following her since this past spring when I thought I’d better brush up on my french before heading back to Paris last July.  I absolutely loved her feed. She includes some almost cinematic pronunciation posts, with her warm and velvety voice walking you through each sentence or phrase.  It took me a while to decide, but I couldn’t come up with good enough reasons not to, so I finally signed up with her to keep up with my french and goals of fluency. Just as I start convincing myself that I’m not bad because I get by with my university and additional courses of french in the last few years, I realize how horrible I truly am when we talk via FaceTime (one of her methods of coaching). I hear my accent, and it is atrocious; my verb conjugation is embarrassing and my stumbling for vocabulary is abysmal.
But there she is, across the screen —  looking all beautiful like a French screen siren (she’s American by the way), while sounding like a melodic nightingale with her perfect french, assuring me that I am too hard on myself and that I am not as horrible as I perceive myself to be. Yeah, tell that to somebody with a type A personality, and see if she believes it.
But here I am… I’ve been trudging along, watching her lectures, listening to her pronunciations as I read along with the notes; submerging myself in her digital immersion guides.  It’s only been a week, but I’ve already dreamt about her (though not in french). I only think that means that the impressions are working, because I’ve been whispering french phrases and sentences all day to practice my diction and pronunciation, noting the nuances the language (and culture) brings forth. { “Mehr-see boh-koo” as thank you very much versus “mehr-see boh-kew” as thanks, nice butt } I am remembering more too. It’s like all the words are coming out of hibernation from the recesses of my brain. It’s weird how that happens, and I full on nerd out when it does, because well… I’m a nerd and proud of it. I’ll keep you updated. But if you find yourself wanting to learn or re-learn français, elle est le tuteur d’aller à 🙂

Also, did I mention that I have expanded my business?
That’s right, folks. I’m upping my game for world domination one website at a time.  I’ll save you all the shameless self-promotion and just direct you to my new awesome website: so you can see for yourselves. If you know anybody needing the service, {photography or virtual support for creatives}, please send them my way, friends. I am actually starting a gig today, how exciting!

Lastly, if you are one of my Canadian friends, please, please go out and vote today if you haven’t already. I’m not going to go on a soapbox and tell you who to vote for, but please do exercise your civic duty and do so.

Merci mille fois, mes amis. À bientôt.
